Registered Psychologist and Registered Teacher Michael Jimenez initially talked about the dismal PISA ranking result of the Philippines. Released on December 3, the 2018 PISA results revealed that the Philippines scored 353 in Mathematics, 357 in Science, and 340 in Reading, all below the average of participating OECD countries. He connected the topic on how awareness can initiate change. He deemed how important it is for us to know our present status to make it our motivation to improve - rather than be discouraged - he called it resilience, or "katatagan", and he took note of how we Filipinos rise up every time that we face failure.
He emphasized what the international stakeholders of the OECD Future of Education and Skills 2030 project have highlighted the three educational foundations : cognitive foundations, which include literacy and numeracy; health foundations, including physical and mental health, and well-being; social and emotional foundations, including moral and ethics and digital literacy and data literacy.
Consequently, he accentuated the importance of learning, not just at the cognitive - but also on the emotional level - the affect component - pushing for an advocacy to study emotional intelligence cognizant that it is an essential component in individual regulation and social competence.
He underscored the importance of research in the field of education - encouraging that the pertinent research problems are the ones in the local scenario - for addressing the local issues and solving them are prerequisites to figuring out the solutions to problems of large-scale proportions. Likewise with mental health - mental health awareness begins in the classroom - one student at a time.
